This is ‘Smoke on the Water’. 194mm edge length by 59mm tall at the heel. The handle is my ‘Flared Diamond’ geometry, in quadruple dyed and stabilized curly box elder with blue, black, green, and grey tones. This knife is forged from AISI W2 tool steel (hardened to 65HRC, with spheroidized carbides for unparalleled durability at that high hardness), and ground in my ‘ultra laser’ geometry for pure cutting function with no loss in food release.
The creation of this blade was an exercise in design and follow through skill. I set a theme, Smoke on the Water, then went about matching every aspect of the blade to that theme. The hamon (hardening line) was created without using clay. The handle was quadruple dyed to illustrate dark grey/black smoke on blue waters. The spacers were chosen for color and material…with blue/grey/brown mammoth molar bracketing fossilized coral. The hand tooled saya was dyed in matching navy, grey, and black. In truth this is one of my favorite projects I’ve ever been lucky enough to create.
